A specimen book of typefaces supplied as matrix fonts for the Ludlow Typograph Machine, a non-composing linecaster.
This is the hardcover specimen book, produced in four editions (the first was an edition without letter designation which I believe is from June 1930, then there was an edition B, then an as-yet-unattested edition C, and finally this, edition D). This hardcover specimen book is distinct from the more common softcover or comb-bound abridged specimen book published under the name "Some Ludlow Typefaces." Each copy of the hardcover "Ludlow Typefaces" was registered with a number; this is copy D-1140. It is missing (in the original copy scanned) the sheet with pp. 104-105; in this copy this sheet would have been pasted in between signatures (if indeed present). However, I have also checked registered copy D-2614 and found not only that it was missing these pages, but that in it pp. 103 and 106 are recto and verso of the same sheet. Friends have checked their copies for me, and discovered the same thing (in copies D-1726 and D-2423). So pp. 104-105 either never existed or were eliminated at some point during the print run.
This book is undated, but must date from between 1940 and 1958. (It contains the typeface "Samson," introduced in 1940. A bookseller's listing online in 2011 for copy D-5075 indicates that that copy also bore a date stamp, presumably by the original owner, of Feb. 26, 1958.) This copy contained, in a pocket in the back cover, a Supplement (which may or may not be a correct supplement for this edition). This Supplement is not reprinted here, but rather is at www.archive.org/details/LudlowTypefacesEditionD1140Supplement
